My oldest daughter Destany and I have been on a journey most people would struggle to understand. I was a teen mom. She was a tiny baby in my arms when I was shot while holding her and pregnant with her sister. My abuser was her father, a grown man, and our lives were shaped by trauma long before either of us had the words for it.
I grew up with my own childhood trauma and no understanding of what neurodivergent even meant. I spent years destroying my life and hurting the people who loved me. Addiction, sex work, cults, abuse, loss, and chaos defined most of my daughters’ childhoods. Alcoholism followed us everywhere. Their father went in and out of prison. His family enabled the abuse for years. While the folks I loved most looked the other way. Mental health issues and addiction shaped the world my daughter grew up in, and she carried the weight of all of it.
For the past decade we have been doing the work to repair what was broken. We cry, we laugh, we build, and we keep choosing each other. In the last few years we made the decision to focus inward and heal on purpose. Now we work out of a small creative studio where we record our podcast, make merch for the farmers market, grow The Vibe, and learn to embrace the things that make us different.
My greatest regret will always be her childhood.
My greatest accomplishment is the woman she became despite all of it.

Des and I have spent the last year making goods for the farmers market and learning how to grow food for our sober community in San Marcos, Texas. We have launched our own studio space for teaching, creating, and making our product lines. We teach our members how to use the earth as part of their healing. We plant gardens with friends, we craft, we create, and now we podcast.
It is simple, messy, meaningful work, and honestly, it is all pretty cool.
